  • As you read your story, pay attention to the following:
  1. Name the major character(s). Name the minor character(s). In what ways do the minor character(s) affect the main character(s)?
  2. What decision(s) has a character made that you totally disagree with. Tell why you disagree with it.
  3. How does this story change your thinking?

Write your ideas on your WIKI page. This should be an ongoing assignment throughout the week. As you read more chapters, add more information.
Your insights can be written using bullet points, using short sentences, or writing paragraphs - your choice.

Due date: Friday, March 9

Assignment #1
March 6
Thomas D
Reading-8

1. Major Characters: Liesel, Rudy Steiner, Rosa and Hans Hubermann, and the narrator (Death)
Minor Characters: Liesel's mom, Liesel's brother, Tommy Müller, the kids in her school, Mr. Steiner, and Sister Maria
Tommy, along with the kids at her school, are around her all of the time and some of them make fun of her. This makes her feel stupid and beat herself up a little. Sister Maria teaches Liesel, and hits her when she causes trouble. Liesel's mother put her in foster care, and she left her memory in Liesel's mind. Liesel's brother left his memory in her mind, and the thought of her brother gives her nightmares and makes her cry. Mr. Steiner is Rudy's father. He raises him and takes care of him.
Max and Liesel's friendship impacts the events in the story. I would say that Max is a main character because of how he and Liesel work together. If Max were found, there would be huge ramifications.

2. I disagree with Liesel's mother putting Liesel in foster care. I disagree with it because no matter what happens, you should always care for your children. Although the mother had good intentions, I think that the mother could've managed to take care of Liesel if she had really tried to. She could have found a way to make more money, or at least a way so that Liesel could have stayed somewhere closer to her.
I also wonder if Liesel's mother did this to shirk her responsibilities. She made it look like it was the best decision for Liesel, but could she have other motives? We don't really know, but it's another way to look at her actions.

3. This story greatly changes my view on death. People always show it as a terrible thing, but this book shows it in a more peaceful way. It tells you that death is inevitable, and you just have to accept that it will happen. It doesn't make a huge deal out of it like people do today. It has also shown me that one person alone can impact the lives of others. Hans Hubermann acts like he is Liesel's real father. He cares for her in every way he can. He also tries to comfort her and bring joy into her life. This shows me that I shouldn't think that I am too small to make a difference in people's lives. It also shows me that even the small things that I can do for people will impact their lives by showing them that they are loved.
Good reflections on death, Thomas.

Group Assignment #2

Historically, WWII is said to have happened between 1941 and 1945. What information can you find to support the idea that the war started prior to 1941. Find facts, dates, events, etc. that give evidence of Germany's power before 1941. Evidence of consequences after 1945?

What role did the Catholic church play in WWII. Why is it often the opinion that the church did not do enough, and possibly ignored what was happening? Explain your answer. Do you agree or disagree?

Is there information to support any of these ideas in your novels? If so, explain.

Assignment should be done in Googledocs. Don't forget to 'share' with me.

Due: Wednesday, March 14.
